Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) Overview

The Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) is a new student finance system being introduced by the UK Government for eligible students studying higher education courses in England.

If your course starts on or after 1 January 2027, you may apply for student finance through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement instead of the current student finance system.

The LLE is designed to give eligible students greater flexibility by allowing student finance to be used for full qualifications and , where available, individual modules throughout their working lives.

As the LLE is a UK Government student finance scheme Student Finance England is responsible for assessing applications, determining eligibility and calculating the funding available.

What is changing?

Instead of separate funding arrangements for different types of higher education study, eligible students will have access to a single lifelong funding entitlement that can be used towards approved higher education study.

Depending on your circumstances and the course you study, the LLE may provide access to:

• tuition fee loans for eligible courses
• maintenance Loans (where applicable) to help with living costs
• funding for eligible modular study, allowing learners to study more flexibly
• funding for a range of approved higher education qualifications

Who can apply?

The LLE is intended for eligible students studying approved higher education courses in England.

Eligibility is assessed by Student Finance England and may depend on factors including:

• your residency and fee status
• your course and course start date
• your previous higher education study
• your eligibility under Student Finance England regulations

Each application is assessed individually.

Previous study

If you have previously studied in higher education or received Government funded student finance, this may affect the amount of funding available to you under the LLE.

Student Finance England will calculate any remaining entitlement using the information they hold about your previous student finance and study history.

Having studied previously does not automatically mean you are ineligible for support. Your entitlement will depend on your individual circumstances.

Applying for student finance

If you are starting an eligible course on or after 1 January 2027, you should apply for student finance through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement application process when applications become available.

Student Finance England will assess:

• your eligibility
• the amount of tuition fee support available
• whether you qualify for maintenance support
• any impact of previous study
