SAINT OF THE WEEK: ST. JEANNE D'ARC (1412–1431) – Born to a peasant family in the village of Domrémy, at a very young age Jeanne started hearing the voices of St. Michael the Archangel, St. Margaret of Antioch and St. Catherine of Alexandria who eventually told her to go to the King of France and help him reconquer his kingdom as the English king was after the throne of France. A few days after her arrival in Orléans as part of a relief army, the English abandoned the siege of the city. Then the King was able to enter Reims where he was crowned with Jeanne at his side. However, in 1430, while she was trying to relieve Compiègne she was captured and sold to the English. After months of imprisonment, she was put on trial by the infamous Pierre Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais, whose goal was to get the support of the English to become archbishop. As a result of her politically motivated and irregular trial she was condemned to death for heresy and burnt at the stake. Around thirty years after her death she was exonerated of all guilt and in 1920 she was canonised.
